Every city in Pakistan has the same problem: missing, broken and rusted manhole covers. Cast iron covers are stolen for scrap, steel covers rust through, and concrete covers crack and crumble under traffic. An open manhole is a serious hazard for pedestrians, motorcyclists and children. GRP (glass reinforced plastic) manhole covers — also called FRP or fiber manhole covers — solve these problems, which is why municipalities, housing societies, industrial estates and utilities are switching to them.
What Is a GRP Manhole Cover?
A GRP manhole cover is moulded from glass fibres and resin into a strong, rigid cover, usually with a matching frame. It replaces cast iron, steel or concrete covers over sewers, drains, water and cable chambers, inspection pits and utility ducts.
Why GRP Beats Cast Iron, Steel and Concrete
| GRP / FRP | Cast iron | Steel | Concrete | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theft risk | No scrap value — not stolen | Very high | High | Low |
| Corrosion | Does not rust | Rusts | Rusts quickly | Cracks, spalls |
| Weight | Light — easy to lift for inspection | Very heavy | Heavy | Very heavy |
| Electrical safety | Non-conductive | Conductive | Conductive | — |
| Sewer gases (H₂S) | Resistant | Attacked | Attacked | Attacked |
Key Benefits
- Theft-proof: Because GRP has no resale value as scrap, covers stay in place — the single biggest reason cities switch.
- Corrosion-free: Unaffected by rain, sewage, hydrogen sulphide gas and saline soil.
- Lightweight: Maintenance crews can open covers without heavy lifting gear, improving safety.
- Non-conductive: Ideal over electrical, telecom and fibre-optic cable chambers.
- Anti-slip surface: Moulded texture gives grip in wet conditions.
- Custom sizes and colours: Covers can be colour-coded for water, sewer, electrical or gas, and moulded with your organisation’s name.
Choosing the Right Load Class
Manhole covers are rated by the traffic they can carry. The widely used European standard EN 124 defines classes such as:
- A15 — pedestrian and cycle areas only
- B125 — footpaths, pedestrian areas and car parks
- C250 — road edges and gutter areas
- D400 — carriageways and roads carrying normal traffic
Always tell your supplier where the cover will be installed — footpath, parking area or road — so the correct load class and thickness are specified. A cover rated for footpaths will fail under truck traffic.
GRP Trench Covers and Gratings
The same material is used for trench covers over cable and drainage trenches in factories, substations and plants. Where drainage is needed, molded FRP grating can be used as a trench cover, giving corrosion-proof, anti-slip access.
Where GRP Covers Are Used
- Municipal sewerage and drainage networks
- Housing societies, commercial plazas and parking areas
- Industrial estates and chemical plants (corrosive drains)
- Electrical substations, telecom and fibre-optic cable chambers
- Water utility valve and meter chambers

What Decides the Price of a GRP Manhole Cover?
- Size (for example 24″ × 24″, 600 mm round, or custom)
- Load class — heavier-duty covers are thicker and use more material
- Cover only, or cover with frame
- Locking mechanism, colour coding and custom logos
- Order quantity

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a GRP manhole cover strong enough for roads?
Yes, if it is designed and tested for a road-traffic load class such as D400. Covers for footpaths and gardens are lighter-duty and must not be used on roads.
Are fiber manhole covers stolen like iron covers?
No. GRP has no scrap value, which is the main reason they are used to stop manhole cover theft.
Can GRP covers be locked?
Yes. Locking options are available for covers in public areas or over sensitive utilities.
Do GRP covers fade or crack in the sun?
Properly made covers use UV-stabilised resin and are designed for outdoor exposure, including Pakistan’s summer heat.
