Steel grating rusts fast in chemical plants, coastal sites and wet process areas. Once corrosion sets in, walkways become slippery, bars thin out and the whole platform turns into a safety risk. FRP grating — fiberglass reinforced plastic grating — solves the problem: it does not rust, it is anti-slip, and it weighs a fraction of steel.
This guide covers the types of FRP grating, standard sizes, how to read load ratings, and where FRP grating is used in Pakistani industry.
What Is FRP Grating?
FRP grating is a panel of glass-fibre-reinforced resin formed into a grid of load-bearing bars. It is used exactly like steel bar grating — for walkways, platforms, stair treads, trench covers and bund floors — but it is resistant to corrosion, non-conductive and much lighter to handle and install.
Types of FRP Grating
Molded grating
Made in a mould as a single piece with continuous glass fibres running in both directions. Molded grating has a square mesh, equal strength in both directions, a high resin content for corrosion resistance, and cut edges that stay sealed. It is the most common choice for chemical plants.
Pultruded grating and profiles
Made from pultruded bars assembled into panels, pultruded grating offers higher stiffness in one direction and is used where longer spans are needed. The same process produces FRP structural profiles — I-beams, channels, angles and tubes — for building complete corrosion-proof platforms and handrails.

How to Choose Depth and Mesh
- Span: The distance between supports is the most important factor. Deeper grating (38 mm or 50 mm) is needed for longer spans; 25 mm suits short spans and light foot traffic.
- Load: Tell your supplier whether the area carries only foot traffic or also trolleys and equipment, and the expected load per square metre. The grating must be checked for both strength and deflection at that span.
- Mesh: Smaller openings (25 × 25 mm) are better where small tools could fall through or for comfortable walking; larger openings drain faster and weigh less.
- Resin: Isophthalic for general industrial use, vinyl ester for severe chemical exposure, phenolic where fire performance is required.
Where FRP Grating Is Used
- Chemical and fertilizer plant walkways and tank platforms
- Acid bund floors and trench covers
- Water and wastewater treatment plants, clarifier walkways and filter decks
- Cooling towers and power plant platforms
- Marine, jetty and offshore decks — see our marine & offshore solutions
- Textile dye houses and food processing wash-down areas
FRP Grating vs Steel Grating
- Corrosion: FRP does not rust; galvanised steel eventually does in chemical or coastal environments.
- Weight: FRP panels can be carried and fitted by hand without cranes or welding.
- Safety: The gritted surface stays slip-resistant even when wet or oily, and FRP is electrically non-conductive.
- Maintenance: No painting or galvanising — just occasional washing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FRP grating strong enough for industrial walkways?
Yes, when the depth and mesh are selected for the span and load. Always share the support spacing and loading with your supplier so the grating can be checked for both strength and deflection.
Can FRP grating be cut on site?
Yes, with a diamond or abrasive blade. Cut edges should be sealed with a compatible resin to maintain corrosion resistance.
How is FRP grating fixed?
With stainless steel or FRP hold-down clips bolted to the supporting structure.
Do you supply FRP handrails and platforms too?
Yes. We supply pultruded FRP profiles — square and round tubes, I-beams, channels, angles and flat bars — to build complete corrosion-proof access structures.
